Start With the Slab, Not the Carpet Sample
Remove dust, coatings, adhesive residue, and loose material so the installer can inspect the actual concrete. Look for cracks, flaking areas, dark staining, mineral deposits, and places where the slab meets exterior walls or plumbing penetrations. A surface that feels dry on inspection day can still transmit vapor as soil conditions and indoor humidity change, so appearance alone is not a moisture assessment.
Ask how the slab will be tested and how the result will be compared with the requirements for the carpet, pad, adhesive, or barrier being proposed. The acceptable condition depends on the complete assembly rather than on a universal household rule. If there has been a leak, seepage, or condensation problem, correct the source and allow the area to stabilize before installing an absorbent floor.
Cracks also need context. A narrow, stable line may only require cleaning and compatible repair, while displacement between the two sides can telegraph through padding and carpet or signal ongoing movement. Low spots can make the floor feel hollow and high points can wear the carpet unevenly. Have questionable movement, recurring moisture, or broad surface deterioration evaluated before flooring work begins.
Create a Clean, Flat, and Secure Base
Vacuum the bare slab thoroughly rather than sweeping debris into corners. Paint droplets, hardened joint compound, and old adhesive ridges must be removed because padding will not hide every projection. Repair products need to be intended for concrete and compatible with anything applied above them. Mixing unrelated patching, sealing, and adhesive products can weaken the bond or trap moisture in an unintended layer.
A stretch-in installation typically uses tack strip around the perimeter with padding between the strips. Fastening to concrete requires hardware and technique suited to the slab, and the strip must be set back correctly so the carpet edge can be stretched and tucked. Loose strip creates a weak perimeter; damaged concrete at the fastener points needs repair rather than additional nails driven into a crumbling edge.
Some products and room uses call for a direct-glue or attached-cushion method instead. Those methods demand especially careful surface preparation because every ridge or void affects the bonded carpet. Ask the installer to name the planned method in the proposal, including how transitions, door clearances, floor drains, and expansion joints will be handled. Do not cover an active joint or a drain without a detail that preserves its intended function.
Choose Padding and Moisture Details as a System
Padding separates the carpet from the hard slab, improves comfort, and reduces the cold feel underfoot. It also changes how moisture moves and dries. A pad advertised as resistant to moisture does not stop water from entering at walls, through cracks, or from above. If liquid reaches beneath a low-permeability layer, drying can take longer because the moisture has fewer paths out.
Vapor-control materials should be selected from actual slab conditions and the requirements of the flooring assembly. Adding plastic on instinct can shift condensation or trap water between layers. Ask who is responsible for specifying the barrier, preparing seams and edges, and confirming compatibility with adhesives and warranties. The answer should cover the carpet, pad, concrete treatment, and room environment together.
Choose carpet construction for the room rather than for concrete in isolation. A frequently used ground-level room needs stable backing and fibers suited to its traffic. A space near an exterior entrance needs a surface that releases tracked soil during cleaning. If moisture exposure remains plausible, modular material may offer more practical access than one broad piece, but it still requires a suitable slab and installation method.
Plan the Job and Protect the Finished Floor
Before installation, agree on who removes old flooring, clears adhesive, repairs the slab, tests moisture, and disposes of debris. Put each responsibility in the written scope so a failed preparation step does not become a debate after the carpet is down. The installer should also explain how long any patch, coating, or adhesive must remain undisturbed before the next layer is installed.

After installation, manage indoor humidity, clean spills promptly, and watch the perimeter for odor, discoloration, lifting, or dampness. If a plumbing event or exterior leak wets the assembly, identify how far moisture traveled and whether the layers can be dried safely. Early access protects the carpet and gives you a better chance of correcting the source before the slab is covered again.
Concrete conditions differ by building and season, so material approval should follow an on-site slab and moisture assessment.
